- typeface defect
- Any peculiarity in typewriting resulting from actual damage to the typeface metal. It may be an actual break in the outline of the letter where the metal is chipped away, sometimes referred to as broken type, or a distorted outline of the letter because of bent or smashed typeface metal. The defect can be corrected only by replacing the type block or element.
